PLEASE REQUEST DEMOS WELL IN ADVANCE

Due to Physics Building renovations, the lead time to set up demo requests has increased due to the need to transport equipment across campus. Please be kind and let me know well ahead of time what you need.

Suitcase Gyro

Purpose:

To demonstrate a conservation of angular momentum.

Procedure:

A relatively large gyro wheel is bolted firmly on the insides of a suitcase. Using the Roto-zip tool spin the wheel pretty fast and close the suitcase. Make a student walk with the case on a straight line and make sharp turns.

Hints:

Perhaps spinning the wheel out of sight will be more dramatic.
