PLEASE REQUEST DEMOS WELL IN ADVANCE

Due to Physics Building renovations, the lead time to set up demo requests has increased due to the need to transport equipment across campus. Please be kind and let me know well ahead of time what you need.

Eddy Current Levitation 2

Purpose:

To demonstrate the levitating effect of induced Eddy currents on a large magnet

Procedure:

Place one large Neodymium magnet between the two large copper plates. Put on Plexiglas cover over sides of plates and move another large Neodymium magnet on top of the apparatus and observe the magnet inside levitate only when the outside magnet is moving.

Hints:

It is important to keep the Plexiglas cover on during the demo. The magnet can jump out of the apparatus towards your hands and may cause serious injury.
