Purpose:To demonstrate the ability of a diamagnetic material to repel a magnet by levitating a small square neodymium magnet between two parallel plates of graphite (or bismuth).
Procedure:Manual for the new apparatus is here.
Adjust the top ring magnets height of the diamagnetic levitation apparatus (first picture) until the small square neodymium magnet floats between the graphite plates. A stable equilibrium is achieved by a repulsion from both the upper and lower carbon plates (second picture).
Hints:Old set up shown below in the last two pictures will be retired. Arrange the setup as shown below. Place the small magnet at the center of the bismuth disks. Make sure the poles of the large and small magnets are in the same orientation. Move the large magnet down until the attraction between the large and small magnets just cancels the weight of the small magnet. At this point, the diamagnetic repulsion of the lower bismuth disk will cause the small magnet to rise up. A stable equilibrium is achieved by a repulsion from both the upper and lower disks.
