Line (discontinuous) SpectraPurpose:To observe the different spectra of ionized gases such as Hydrogen, Deuterium, Helium, Nitrogen, Iodine and Mercury.Procedure:There are two options:1) A diffraction grating can be taped on the lens of a video camera and the line spectra can be displayed on a projector screen. 2) We have many individual gratings that can be passed out to the class and have the students observe the line spectra by themselves. The different gas tubes are easily changed and the spectra are quite beautiful. The gratings can also be rotated to show some recombination of the separated colors. Equipment:
