PLEASE REQUEST DEMOS WELL IN ADVANCE

Due to Physics Building renovations, the lead time to set up demo requests has increased due to the need to transport equipment across campus. Please be kind and let me know well ahead of time what you need.

Laser Interference

Purpose:

To demonstrate the interference of the laser beam light

Procedure:

Point the green laser beam onto the double layered microscope slide and reflect it onto the screen. Dark interference lines formed by the light reflected off of front and back surfaces of the double slide can be seen quite clearly. This takes a little practice to get an image that the whole class can view.

Hints:

One may use a divergent lens in front of the reflected light to expand the pattern on the screen for better view. Also demonstrate that the original beam spot does not have the same structure.

Equipment:

  • Microscope slide
  • Uniphase Green Laser
