PLEASE REQUEST DEMOS WELL IN ADVANCE

Due to Physics Building renovations, the lead time to set up demo requests has increased due to the need to transport equipment across campus. Please be kind and let me know well ahead of time what you need.

Ionic Drive

Purpose:

To demonstrate electrostatic ionization.

Procedure:

Attach one electrode of Wimshurst machine to pin of whirl stand making sure to leave enough room for whirl to spin freely. As a high density charge builds up on the points of the whirl, ions will be formed in the air surrounding the points. The points will attract some ions causing the whirl to start spinning. Try reversing the direction of the whirl with a pencil and it will slow down, stop, and then start back in the original direction.

Equipment:

  • Wimshurst Machine
  • Electric Whirl
  • Stand
