PLEASE REQUEST DEMOS WELL IN ADVANCE

Due to Physics Building renovations, the lead time to set up demo requests has increased due to the need to transport equipment across campus. Please be kind and let me know well ahead of time what you need.

Heat Capacity using Wax and metal Balls

Purpose:

To demonstrate heat capacity of different metals.

Procedure:

Equal volume balls made of Aluminum, Lead, Brass and Steel, are mounted on a holder. Balls are heated to the same temperature by dipping them in a beaker with boiling water. Heated balls are placed on paraffin sheet, as shown. They melt completely through the paraffin, or only partially to different depths proportional to their heat capacity.
