PLEASE REQUEST DEMOS WELL IN ADVANCE

Due to Physics Building renovations, the lead time to set up demo requests has increased due to the need to transport equipment across campus. Please be kind and let me know well ahead of time what you need.

Interference of Sound Waves

Purpose:

To demonstrate the interference pattern produced by two sound sources of the same frequency.

Procedure:

Connect an oscillator (function generator) to each speaker and tune to 5 khz. By shifting their heads from side to side while plugging one ear with a finger, the students will be able to hear a definite interference pattern.

Hints:

One can use sound meter to see the variations of the intensity from spot to spot.

Equipment:

  • Audio Oscillator
  • Speakers w/ Built-In Audio Amps
