Absolute Zero

Purpose:

To determine the absolute zero point on the celsuis scale.

Procedure:

Pump out the air in the pressure bulb and refill with helium to approximately 1100mm.

Hints:

Mix methanol and dry ice in dewar large enough to hold bulb.

Equipment:

  • Vaccum Pump
  • Dewar
  • Bulb pressure gauge
  • Dry Ice
  • Graph paper for overhead projector
  • Helium Gas
  • Hot pot 1/2 full of water
  • Ice Water Bath
  • Liquid Nitrogen
  • Methanol
  • Bucket
