PLEASE REQUEST DEMOS WELL IN ADVANCE

Due to Physics Building renovations, the lead time to set up demo requests has increased due to the need to transport equipment across campus. Please be kind and let me know well ahead of time what you need.

video  - Pendula, Spring and Simple

Purpose:

Introduce students to the hanging mass from a spring or a string systems.

Procedure:

SPRING PENDULUM - mass hanging from a spring

One can calculate k for the spring from F = kx by hanging different masses from the end and noting the amount the spring stretches.

Different masses and springs can be used for the pendulum, while noting similarities and/or differences. For example:
  • For the same spring k: How does different mass affect the period T?
  • For the same mass M: How does different spring affect the period T?

SIMPLE PENDULUM - mass hanging from a string

For the simple pendulum, one can measure the length of the string, then calculate the period T. Verify by timing 10 oscillations. Different masses can be used for the pendulum, while noting similarities and/or differences. For example:
  • For the same string length L: How does different mass affect the period T?
  • For the same mass M: How does different string length affect the period T?
