video - Standards of MeasurementPurpose:To dramatize the need for fixed standards of measurement.Procedure:![]() Before class, set tower to a collapsed height of 94cm. Give meter sticks to two students and have student with the "short" 98cm meter stick measure the tower first. Record results. Expand tower 1cm, and have second student with the regular meter stick re-measure the expanded tower. The fully compressed tower is 94cm. When measured by a short meter stick it'll measure 96cm. When expanded by 1cm, on either scale, it'll re-measure as 95cm on a regular meter stick. So the drama is that instead of gaining a centimeter over the original length we loose a centimeter.
