A World of Ideas with Bill Moyers: Steven Weinberg

Description:

In this program, Weinberg begins with an intriguing question, "Why is there something instead of nothing?" The discussion leads to a brief explanation of scientific inquiry and its close relationship to everyday living. Further questions about modern breakthroughs in physics and technological developments direct the discussion to the threat of nuclear war and research on the particle acceleration studies. Weinberg offers his criticism of nuclear military policy and the development of Star Wars. His advice to presidents: get an opinion from someone not directly involved with selling the system. Concerning the super collider, he admits that there is little practicle application, but suggests that it has great spiritual significance.
