Torricelli's Law

Purpose:

To show that static pressure is a function of the depth. Or to show that water stream from the opening in the middle of the cylinder has the maximum range.

Procedure:

Fill the cylinder with water through the top hose. Adjust the water flow so the level is held constant at relief opening on the side of the cylinder. Make sure that the openings in the drain pan are above the sink, so that water will drain in it.

Hints:

The speed of the water exiting from the opening in the side of the cylinder is given by:

v = sqrt{2gh},

Where h is the vertical distance between the water surface and the center of the opening.
